What inspired you to start donating to the station? Was there something going on in your life at the time?
It started when our kids were little. PBS was pretty much the only TV we let them watch. My friends teased me for it, but I just wasn't comfortable with all the advertising aimed at little kids. But the kids didn’t feel deprived. They loved the shows, especially Arthur and Wishbone.
Then in 2001 The Bridge came on the air. We'd moved to KC in 2000 and I'd been pretty disappointed by the radio stations until then. I started giving because it added something you couldn't find anywhere else in town, it kept me up on new artists, and I was spending a lot of time in a minivan back then, so I liked knowing the kids were getting exposed to some great music along with the diet of whatever pop music was ‘in’ at the time. Sharing new music finds is something we continue to do.
We get so much out of PBS and The Bridge that it feels right to give back, especially knowing plenty of people who love these stations have the desire, but may not have the means to support them. And when I compare it to what we spend on streaming and other types of entertainment, it's an easy call.
What do you enjoy about being members of the Producers Society at Kansas City PBS?
It feels like we have a real relationship with the station and the people behind it. They're creative, dedicated and just good people. I love how both PBS and the Bridge support young artists, early career journalists, and radio personalities/music curators. The special opportunities are a real treat too. Getting to preview the Vietnam documentary and then sit in on the panel with Ken Burns is not something you get to do every day. Finally, our grown kids live out of state now, in a city with a lot of arts and culture. We want KC to have that kind of scene.
What's a favorite PBS-related memory from your life?
Two come to mind. After we watched Ken Burns' national parks documentary, I called my husband and insisted that we start taking our kids to the national parks. It was an easy sell! We’ve had so many amazing memories. The kids' favorite trips have been to the national parks, and even as adults they are always up for another trip with us to a new park. The other is from the little-kid years. Sunday night became my night to unwind. The joke among the family was that at 7 p.m., everyone knew to leave Mom alone, because it was "British night” and I could watch the latest MASTERPIECE programs.
