Who Will Lead KC: The Final Mayoral Debate

When it comes to choosing a new mayor, Kansas City voters are the hiring managers and the bosses. And, as with any prospective employee, it’s useful to know about the personalities and skill sets of the two candidates: Jolie Justus and Quinton Lucas.

So, before this duo share the stage at the Kansas City PBS debate, which will premier Friday June 14th at 7:30 p.m. on Kansas City PBS, let’s take a quick look at their qualifications. And, for the impatient, you can watch a livestream of the debate on KCPT’s Facebook page at 10 a.m. that Friday.
Justus is the in-district City Council member for Kansas City’s 4th District. Her committee assignments include chairing the Airport Committee. In her professional life, she is director of pro bono services at the law firm of Shook, Hardy & Bacon. Mayor Sly James is among the people who have endorsed Justus, whose endorsements also include the Teamsters. She also has the support of her “pack of energetic rescue dogs.”

Lucas is the at-large City Council member for Kansas City’s 3rd District. In his professional life, he is a law lecturer at the University of Kansas Law School. He has been endorsed by the Kansas City Fraternal Order of Police, the Kansas City branch of the International Association of Firefighters and Freedom Inc., a political organization focused on African American civil rights. If elected, Lucas would be Kansas City’s youngest mayor in living memory. To learn more about this Chief’s superfan, you can check out his website.
