Kansas City PBS has announced it will air American Veteran, a four-part documentary series tracing the veteran experience throughout American history. The first episode will air on October 26 with new installments airing each Tuesday at 8 p.m. through November 16.
"American Veteran is the type of landmark national programming that we look forward to each year,” Kliff Kuehl, President & CEO of Kansas City PBS, said. “It's educational and emotional, escorting audiences into the lives of those who have served and brings context to a subset of our culture that many haven’t experienced. With this expanded collection of programming and reporting, audiences can read, watch or listen to the stories of local and national veterans.”
In conjunction with the anticipated premiere of American Veteran, Kansas City PBS has released a curated collection of local and national programming that tells stories from across the veteran experience, including Jewish Soldiers serving in World War II, Kansas City veterans returning home from the Middle East, Native American veterans and their connection to their culture and veterans coping with a service-connected disability through the help of service dogs.

From the citizen-soldiers returning from the Revolution to today’s warrior class, American Veteran is a profoundly moving story, illuminating the veteran experience with a stunning range of voices throughout history and examines the transformative experience of serving in the military and how it has changed the men and women who have joined the ranks. It also examines how vets have been perceived throughout the nation’s history. Sometimes honored, sometimes reviled, ignored or forgotten, veterans may re-enter civilian life to encounter a population that often has little or no knowledge of their experience. Each episode features a guest host, including TV personality and former Marine Drew Carey and veteran and Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth, as well as interviews with veterans and their families.
