An upcoming special installment of Week in Review will dive into how Covid-19 has upended the criminal justice system. Airing Friday, August 14, Justice Deferred, tracks the unique challenges facing our local court systems as nearly every institution finds itself upended by the pandemic.
Since local shut-down orders were put in place in March, there has not been a single jury trial anywhere in the Kansas City metro area. Now, courts are concerned how they'll ever get twelve people to sit next to each other in a courtroom again. And what about those who have been charged? Hundreds of defendants have been sitting in jail cells indefinitely, with no certainty on when a jury of their peers will decide their fate.
Join host Nick Haines as he explores the under-reported nuance of what exactly Covid-19 means for the courtroom - now, and in the coming months.
Justice Deferred airs Friday, August 14 at 7:30 pm on Channel 19.
