Social distancing and staying safe in the age of COVID doesn’t mean you can’t still spread a little joy in your neighborhood.
KCPT’s Education Department recently put on a parade, traveling to Kansas City families, as part of the KCPT Kids in Your Neighborhood program. Gary Brock, Director of Education; Denice Mackey, Education Assistant; and Angela Kmeck, Youth Engagement Contractor, brought some of PBS’ most beloved characters along for the ride as they delivered books, toys, stickers, station gifts and more to brighten the family’s spirits during this time.
“We've had an incredible year getting to know the families who are participating in the KCPT Kids In Your Neighborhood program,” said Kmeck. “When the COVID stay-at-home order came, we continued meeting with the families over Zoom but knew we needed to do something really special to finish out the program. The car parade idea formed quickly as we came up with the plan to deliver goody bags to our families. We had so much fun filling our cars with the bags and PBS characters, seeing the looks on the kids' faces made it all worth it!”
KCPT Kids In Your Neighborhood connects communities with free PBS KIDS resources to improve preschoolers' kindergarten readiness. The program launched in the fall of 2019, and was designed to help reach parents, family members, neighbors and other caregivers in the 64128 neighborhood. The initiative is made possible by a grant from the Durwood Foundation.
